The UK supermarket chain Tesco has announced that it will replace the plastic packaging of its own-brand pocket tissues with recyclable paper. This retail giant states that this move will save over 55 million pieces of soft plastic per year or create approximately 35 tons of new soft plastic annually.

Tesco's Events Manager, Courtney Parlett, stated, "Unlike boxed tissues, pocket tissues are often used on the go and can easily become litter. The new paper packaging is as functional as the old plastic packaging but is more sustainable."

The company claims to have removed nearly 2.2 billion plastic items from its UK operations, including over 200 million plastic bags from the group's grocery deliveries, over 100 million additional lids for products like wet wipes, cream, yogurt, and desserts, and 75 million canned foods no longer packaged in plastic.
